Class 4 is the largest MOT class by vehicle volume in Great Britain. It covers passenger cars up to 8 seats and goods vehicles up to 3,000kg unladen. Every vehicle under that weight and seat threshold sits in Class 4 regardless of fuel type, drivetrain or body style. The single statutory maximum is £54.85.

Free Retest Rules for a Failed Class 4 Test
DVSA publishes the free-retest framework alongside the fee schedule:
- Free full retest if the car is left at the same garage overnight and re-tested the next working day.
- Free partial retest on the originally failed items only if the car is returned to the same garage within 10 working days.
- Full fee (up to £54.85) at any other garage, or after the 10-working-day window expires.
A free partial retest covers only the items that originally failed; if anything else has changed or deteriorated, the garage may need to charge for a full retest.
