Annual Car Costs UK: The Full Breakdown for 2026

The MOT test is one of the smallest annual car costs, but when you add repairs it becomes one of the most unpredictable. Here is the complete picture of what it costs to run a car in the UK in 2026.

Your MOT Cost in Context

The MOT test fee itself (£30-55) is one of the smallest annual car costs, typically less than 2% of your total annual spend. However, the total MOT cost including repairs is one of the most variable items:

Vehicle ageAvg MOT total (test + repairs)% of annual costs
3 years£50-801-2%
5 years£70-1502-3%
8 years£120-3003-6%
12 years£180-5005-12%
15+ years£200-700+7-18%

For younger cars, the MOT is trivial. For older cars, it can become the trigger that makes owners consider whether the car is still worth keeping. See our failure rate by age guide.

Road Tax (VED)

Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax) is the other mandatory annual cost alongside the MOT. From April 2026, the standard rate for most cars registered after 1 April 2017 is £190 per year. Electric vehicles pay £10 per year.

First-year rates vary dramatically by CO2 emissions, ranging from £10 for zero-emission vehicles to over £5,000 for the highest-emitting new cars. Cars with a list price over £40,000 also pay an additional premium of £410 per year for years 2-6.

How to Reduce Your Annual Car Costs

Save on the MOT

Use our cheapest MOT guide to find deals, and do the pre-MOT checklist to avoid unnecessary repair bills. Typical saving: £50-200/year.

Check your road tax band

Make sure you are paying the correct rate. Some car owners overpay because their vehicle was recategorised or they are eligible for a lower rate. Check at HowMuchIsCarTax.com.

Compare insurance annually

Never auto-renew your car insurance. Comparison sites typically save £100-300 per year. Set a calendar reminder 3 weeks before renewal to shop around.

Use independent garages for servicing

Main dealer servicing costs 40-60% more than independent garages. After the warranty period, there is usually no reason to stay with the dealer. Your warranty is not affected by using an independent garage as long as they follow the manufacturer's schedule.

Consider running costs before buying

The purchase price is only part of the cost. A cheap older car with high insurance, fuel, and repair costs can be more expensive than a newer, more efficient vehicle when you factor in total annual running costs.
