MOTCost.com is an independent guide to MOT costs and a free MOT reminder service. This policy explains what personal data we handle and your rights over it. It covers the reminder service specifically; browsing the rest of the site does not require you to give us any personal data.

The MOT lookup tool

When you enter a registration to check its MOT status, we send that registration to the DVSA MOT history service to retrieve the result and show it to you. We do not need, and do not ask for, any personal information to perform a lookup. We do not store the registrations that are looked up against you.

MOT reminders: what we collect and why

If you sign up for reminders we store only:
  • your email address, so we can send the reminder;
  • the vehicle registration you want reminders for;
  • the MOT expiry date for that vehicle, so we know when to email you;
  • the date you gave consent, and the status of your subscription.

We use this only to email you roughly one month and one week before the MOT is due. We do not use it for any other marketing. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you give by ticking the box at sign-up.

Double opt-in

After you sign up we email you a confirmation link. We do not send any reminders until you click it. This makes sure nobody can sign up an email address that is not theirs.

Who we share it with

We do not sell or share your data. Your email is processed by our email delivery provider (Microsoft Azure Communication Services) solely to deliver the reminder. Vehicle and MOT data comes from the DVSA under the Open Government Licence.

How long we keep it

We keep your subscription while it is active. If you unsubscribe, we stop sending emails immediately and remove your details. You can also ask us to delete your data at any time.

Your rights

You can unsubscribe with one click from any reminder email. You have the right to access, correct or delete the data we hold about you, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these, email [email protected].

Cookies and analytics

We use privacy-respecting analytics to understand aggregate site usage. We do not use advertising cookies.

Changes

We may update this policy; the date at the top shows when it last changed.
